Maiden was part of the data-center economy long before the industry became a regular local-development topic. Apple established its Maiden campus in 2009. Microsoft is now constructing the Boyd Farms campus off Zeb Haynes Road.
The EDC reported more than $4 billion invested locally by 2025.

Boyd Farms construction is advancing
Microsoft’s May 2026 update reported work on foundations, electrical systems, underground utilities, slabs, water, sewer, stormwater, fire protection, telecommunications, and medium-voltage infrastructure. Clark Construction was identified as general contractor.
Microsoft also reported that additional rock removal might be needed. If controlled blasting is approved, the company says neighbors will be notified and applicable safety requirements will apply.
Apple remains the established anchor
Apple helped establish Maiden as a major technology-infrastructure location. The company later included expanded North Carolina data-center capacity in a national investment announcement, but did not provide enough detail to confirm another specific Maiden construction phase.
What data centers can contribute
- Large taxable buildings and equipment
- Construction and skilled-trade work
- Demand for electrical, mechanical, security, and technical contractors
- Utility and telecommunications infrastructure
- A smaller permanent workforce relative to capital invested
Questions the community should continue asking
- How much electricity and water will operating campuses use?
- What generator testing, sound, and exterior lighting will neighbors experience?
- How will stormwater and construction traffic be managed?
- What permanent positions will be created locally?
- What infrastructure costs and tax revenue will be documented?
What nearby buyers should verify
Distance alone does not establish an effect on real estate. Terrain, vegetation, road access, sight lines, utility corridors, noise sources, drainage, and adjoining zoning should be investigated for the exact parcel.
The practical takeaway
Maiden has the county’s deepest data-center history, and Microsoft’s construction adds another major campus to that economy.
The responsible approach is to recognize the potential tax-base and infrastructure benefits while continuing to seek site-specific operating information as it becomes available.
